Some protesters saw the notorious head of the state intelligence agency, General Adolphe Nshimirimana, enter the convent. Photograph: Carl de Souza/AFP/Getty ImagesAfter the war, Adolphe forged ties with a violent rebel group in the DRC formed by the remnants of Rwanda’s genocidaires. On 9 September, two days after the murder, the police arrested a local man named Christian Claude Butoyi and charged him with the nuns’ murder. Mwarabu spoke into Rugurika’s microphone, and confessed that he and three others had killed the nuns, on the orders of General Adolphe. General Adolphe, however, remained in Bujumbura, standing by to launch a counter-attack against the coup plotters.
